Frequently Asked Questions

General

What is the purpose of this club?

To provide a space for students of color, often in majority white programs, to learn and build community around shared interests in the wide-reaching, interdisciplinary field of urban planning.

How often does the club meet?

We meet bi-weekly (twice a month) during the fall, winter, and spring quarters. We meet less frequently during the summer quarter. Join our club for our meeting times or attend our open events to get acquainted!

Are there any membership fees?

There are no membership fees and our events are almost always free. The only exceptions may be if we are attending something that requires a fee that we are unable to subsidize on our limited club budget.

Who can join the club?

You must be a student at Portland State University (or on a case-by-case basis) enrolled for at least one credit and paying the Incidental/Student Fee and you must be Black, Indigenous, or a person of color (BIPOC).

We recognize that race is a social construct and identity is complex. If you are white presenting, you are welcome to join and we also ask that everyone in our club works to understand their various positionalities and areas of privilege and oppression. This is especially important during interpersonal interactions and navigating cycles of harm and repair.

Events

Do I have to register for your events?

It depends on the event. If registration is required then it will be clear in the marketing and event descriptions.

Are your events open to the public?

Some of our events are open to the public. Some of our events are for our club members only. We will make it clear on our marketing and event descriptions who the event is for and you’re welcome to reach out if you are unsure.

Do you provide food?

Depending on the time of day and the type of event we may provide food, free for attendees. If that is the case we will note that “food will be provided” or “refreshments will be served” and if there is no mention then it’s safe to assume we will not be providing food.

We try to select items that will meet a variety of dietary needs. If you have specific requests or questions please contact us.

How accessible are your events?

Physical accessibility: A majority of our events are held on the Portland State University campus. The buildings we host events in are ADA-compliant. If we are off campus then it depends on the location. We will do our best to provide details in the event description.

Bathrooms: There are ADA compliant men, women, and gender neutral restrooms. If we are in the CUPA building then there is a changing table in at least one bathroom.

Hybrid events: Most of our events are hybrid. This is indicated on our marketing and event descriptions if there’s a virtual option.

Captions: If we have a virtual option then closed captioning will be available. This is something you can enable in your personal view.

Translations and interpretations: Our meetings and events are held in English. Unfortunately, our club has limited funds and finding translators and/or interpreters for our events can be challenging. This is a service we would eventually like to be able to provide reliably.

If you have any suggestions or recommendations for us on increasing the accessibility of our events please contact us.
