An androgynous person stands dressed in a full length, poofy black leather outfit. Their skin is pale and they have red hair. They stand with their right arm on their hip, and their elbow forming a right angle. Their left hang hangs down against their side. The floor is a black and white checker pattern, and there are four chandeliers, each filled with lit candles, lighting the room behind them. Banner for 5th Avenue Cinema Presents: Orlando

Dir. Sally Potter (1992) | UK, France, Italy, Netherlands, Russia | Netherlands | 93 min | DCP

Director Sally Potter and the indelible Tilda Swinton bring to life Virginia Woolf’s 1928 novel Orlando in this 1992 adaptation. Harnessing the perspective that only Woolf could take, they explore Orlando together in an incredible dialogue that not only visually dazzles on screen but cements as a once in a lifetime cinematic interpretation. Through centuries of questions surrounding fixed ideas of gender, they bring to power the fluidity of sex and gender. Orlando, an androgynous young noble is given an estate by Queen Elizabeth I (played brilliantly by Quentin Crisp) on her death bed under the conditions that they “Do not fade. Do not wither. Do not grow old.” As the centuries pass by Orlando changes and contemplates this gift and curse. Time, greed, love and true wealth shift and shape Potter’s glorious set design and soundtrack.
