PIAAA will be inviting students into our space to celebrate Lunar New Year. Every aspect of Lunar New Year – the foods, decorations, the color red – has symbolic meaning. We want to portray the symbolisms in our event through the students’ engagement with our activities. We will be offering a tea tasting. Oolong and black teas are commonly enjoyed during Lunar New Year family celebrations. Students will be taught the symbolism behind this tradition while sipping their teas and sampling traditional snacks (will also be labelled with their various meanings, such as prosperity and wealth). We invite students to share their Lunar New Year stories (if they have any), reflections from the past year, and what goals they have for the Year of the Horse. Mahjong, a traditional Chinese game, will be set out for students to play. The overarching theme of this event is to bring students together to bond and learn about Lunar New Year and leave with a sense of hope for the Year of the Horse.
