Join PSU's Student Community Engagement Center to volunteer your time and energies to help one of our community partners on a "Serve Your City" project!
Once every other Thursday, help sort and organize gently used, community-donated school supplies, which will later be distributed to under-resourced students and classrooms in the Portland Public School district. A typical volunteer session includes a welcome, introductions, an overview of our task, sorting donated supplies, and a closing reflection.
This is a series project and will take place bi-weekly on five Thursdays: Jan 15, Jan 29, Feb 12, Feb 26, and Mar 12.
Since opening in 1999, Schoolhouse Supplies has sought to promote educational equity in the Portland area by providing free school supplies to classrooms in need. So far, Schoolhouse Supplies has distributed over $53 million in free school supplies, providing support to thousands of children.
Schoolhouse Supplies' main goal is to ensure that every child has access to learning tools that allow them to achieve academic success, regardless of their family’s income or racial/ethnic identity. This is done through collecting donations from the community, keeping unused school supplies out of the landfill, and putting them into the hands of children in need.
This project is open to Portland State University students. Come make a big impact on kids in need and have fun sorting books with fellow PSU students!
