Elections Candidate Agreements & Candidacy Information

The Associated Students of Portland State University (ASPSU) will commence annual student government elections for the President, Vice President, Senate, and Student Fee Committee (SFC) upon receiving application from candidates. Candidates and campaigns are bound by the contents of the ASPSU Elections governing documents. The representation of the Portland State University student body puts elected members of ASPSU in a position of considerable significance.

Due to this, we believe it is vital that candidates are to refrain from unethical behavior at all times during the elections period. Personal integrity and the veracity and quality of student representation are paramount to ensuring that the requirements of each position are fulfilled. Campaigns are to follow the principles of fairness, respect, and professionalism, as defined within the ASPSU Elections Governing documents.

The ASPSU Elections Committee will provide time for questions about these documents and the elections process during the candidate orientations during week 2 of Spring term.

As a member of ASPSU, you are required to attend Senate Meetings on Mondays - these
meetings will take place weekly on Mondays from 4-6 pm during Fall, Winter, and Spring terms
and will be held primarily in-person.

administration on June 1st 4-6 pm (location to be announced) and the mandatory annual training/retreat
on June 15th 10 am - 4 pm in person (location to be announced).

If you are running as an SFC member there will be additional in-person training dates on June 17th 9 am - 5 pm and June 18th 9 am - 4 pm and summer term meeting times are set to be Tuesdays and Thursdays 1-4 pm starting the week following ASPSU/SFC training and SFC will meet for these times up until the week before fall term at which time new meeting dates/times will be selected throughout the year by members collaboratively. These meetings will take place primarily in person, but remote/virtual attendance can be accommodated in extenuating circumstances. *

As an SFC member of ASPSU, you are required to attend SFC Meetings every week totaling 6
hours. Are you willing to adjust your class schedule and be available to attend SFC meetings
during Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring term? *

If you are running as a Senator of ASPSU, you are required to participate in training and then in meetings starting in Fall term in Senate meetings, 1 ASPSU committee, and one additional ASPSU or campus committee. By applying for the senator role you are committing to attend these on a weekly basis. *

If you are running as a senator of ASPSU you will be required to take Leadership Fellows, a leadership development program facilitated by SALP as a part of the leadership development component of your Educational Leadership Service Award (ELSA) requirement.

You will be required to attend one of the following session times during the year (you may change during future terms depending on your class schedule as needed) for weeks 2, 4, 6, and 8 of fall, winter and spring term:
- Tuesday 4-5:30 pm
- Wednesday 4-5:30 pm
- Thursday 4-5:30 pm *

If you are running for senator but hope to ultimately be elected as either a Senate Speaker or Senate Committee Chairs there will be an additional in-person training date on September 24th 1-4 pm (location to be announced). *

If you are running as P/VP there will be an additional in-person training date on June 16th 12-4 pm and you will work with the Chief of Staff, Campus Coordinator, and SFC Chair (once elected internally within SFC) to determine weekly summer term meeting times throughout the summer and up until the week before fall term at which time new meeting dates/times will be selected each term throughout the year by members collaboratively. These meetings will take place primarily in person, but remote/virtual attendance can be accommodated in extenuating circumstances. *

I am enrolled in at least 6 credits (Undergrad) / 5 credits (Graduate) and I understand that in order to be eligible to participate in ASPSU and receive the Educational Service Leadership Award (ELSA) I must maintain academic eligibility

I will attend one mandatory candidate orientation session during week 2 of Spring term. Dates will be sent out in advance to those who fill out this application by week 1 of Spring term at the latest.

I give permission for the ASPSU advisor to be able to verify my eligibility with student code of conduct regarding violations and academic eligbility.

I understand that if I have any questions/problems/concerns, it is my responsibility to clarify with the ASPSU Elections committee or ASPSU Advisor.

I agree to read all materials, rules, guidelines, as set forth in the candidate orientation and within this application.

I understand I can only receive one (1) ELSA per term from SALP and that an ELSA would be a part of my overall financial aid package.

I understand that failure to abide by all of the rules and guidelines may result in my disqualification as a candidate.

I commit to attending one of the 2 orientations for candidates or writing an email to Olli Benway, Elections Committee Chair at election@pdx.edu explaining why I cannot attend and scheduling a 1:1 training. The orientation dates will be announced at the latest by week 1 of Spring term and will take place during week 2 of Spring term. *

We recommend that the picture is clear, not too small, and is a professional portrait to be displayed for your candidacy that you feel best represents you. If you do not provide a photo, we will use the ASPSU logo in its place.

Summarize the office for which you are running and special skills and qualifications you have acquired from employment, previous volunteer work, or through other activities, including student groups, community organizations, hobbies, sports etc. The statement and photo you provide will be included in the voter’s pamphlet (300 word limit). *
